Modernized e-File (MeF)

General Information

The Illinois Department of Revenue, in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service now has the ability to retrieve, process, acknowledge and accept electronically filed returns as part of the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) Program.  MeF is an integrated, web-based, electronic filing platform replacing the legacy e-File system.  MeF uses new architecture for electronic filing and introduces a more fully automated, real-time, and scalable e-File system. The MeF platform provides the taxpayer with the ability to conduct all interactions electronically and allows account management by electronic return originators, transmitters and tax authorities.

All entities wishing to participate must register with the IRS in order to participate in MeF. Combined fed/state filings, state only returns and payments (estimated payment(s), extension and tax payments) are allowed to be combined or filed separately through MeF.  The Illinois MeF program will accept and process three years of returns on a rolling calendar basis beginning with tax year 2009.

For additional information see BTR-36, Implementation Guide for Business Income Tax Federal/State Electronic Filing Program and for information on what forms/schedules are currently accepted see IL-1120 MeF "Live" List.

Note: The 2011 IL-1120 and 2011 IL-1120-ST E-File is currently in production.
